How many affiliate programs does a creator actually need?

Part of: For creators

Far fewer than the round-up posts suggest. Across 7310 live US listings pulled today, three advertisers held 79.0% of everything linkable and ten held 93.4%.

The long tail is real but thin: 65 of the 91 advertisers here carry fewer than ten relevant listings each.

One specialist retailer holds most of the physical-media inventory a creator in this niche would ever link. Depth in your subject beats catalogue size.

A creator covering turntables, records and discs has a genuine portfolio decision to make: 23 advertisers carry ten or more relevant listings, and they hold different things — a media specialist, pro-audio dealers, homeware marketplaces for storage.

A creator covering Y2K fashion has almost no decision to make. 97.8% of the inventory sits with one marketplace, and joining five more programmes adds a rounding error to coverage.

In Y2K fashion nearly every linkable item sits at one marketplace. Programme diversification cannot fix an inventory problem.

How to decide, in four steps

  1. List twenty things you would actually link this month. Not categories: specific objects.
  2. Find who stocks them. If four advertisers cover eighteen of the twenty, that is your list.
  3. Check whether the stock is restockable. A marketplace holding most of your inventory means most of your links are one of one, and your content strategy has to survive that.
  4. Only then look at terms. A generous rate on a programme that stocks nothing you cover pays nothing.

What we cannot tell you

Which of these programmes will approve you, what they pay, or how long their cookies last. LinkToLooks is approved by no affiliate network and has earned $0 in affiliate revenue to date, so every figure here is a catalogue measurement rather than an earnings claim.

Honest empty: this page contains no approval odds, no commission rates and no programme rankings by payout. Those live in network dashboards, and the versions on creator blogs are usually undated.

Last verified 1 September 2026 against 7310 deduplicated live US listings from 91 advertisers in the CJ product feed. Peer-to-peer asks of $500 or more are excluded as seller placeholders, as are repdigit asks such as $999 and $9,999. Asking prices are what sellers want on this date; they are not sold prices.

Some links here are affiliate links. LinkToLooks has earned $0 from them to date — no network has approved us yet — so nothing on this page is picked to hit a payout.

Choosing how many programs to join, asked plainly

How many affiliate programs should a creator join?

Fewer than the lists suggest. In today's pull of 7310 live US listings, the top three advertisers held 79.0% of everything and the top ten held 93.4%. The remaining 81 advertisers split what is left.

Which one program matters most?

For nostalgia and secondhand niches, one peer-to-peer marketplace held 59.9% of all listings on its own. Nothing else comes close, and no combination of small programmes replaces it.

Does the answer change by niche?

Sharply. In the physical-media and hi-fi lane the top three advertisers hold 56.2% and 79 advertisers carry stock at all. In Y2K fashion one marketplace holds 97.8% and only 3 advertisers carry ten listings or more.

Is there a reason to join a small program?

One good reason: it holds inventory nobody else has. A specialist with 500 relevant listings beats a general retailer with 500,000 of which five are relevant. Judge programmes by coverage of your subject, not by catalogue size.
