How much does a creator actually earn per affiliate sale?
Part of: For creators
The question every new creator asks, and the one most answers dodge, is what a single sale is actually worth. It is worth exactly the order value times your commission rate, and only one of those two is knowable from outside. So let us do the knowable half properly.
A single affiliate sale in the categories we price is worth between $0.60 and $16.20 to a creator, depending almost entirely on category and rate. The median live listing across twelve nostalgia and audio categories on 1 September 2026 ran from $20.00 to $81.00.
Choosing a higher-order-value category is a larger lever than almost anything you can do to your posting schedule.
Why category beats effort
Take two creators posting identically well. One covers baby tees at a $20.00 median order; one covers turntables at $81.00. At the same commission rate and the same conversion rate, the second earns four times as much from the same audience. No amount of posting cadence closes a 4× gap.
| Category | Median order | Sales needed for $500 at 5% | at 10% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby tees | $20.00 | 500 | 250 |
| Bucket hats | $25.00 | 400 | 200 |
| Bluetooth speakers | $30.99 | 323 | 162 |
| Cargo trousers | $32.00 | 313 | 157 |
| Oval sunglasses | $35.50 | 282 | 141 |
| Headphones | $40.00 | 250 | 125 |
| Steelbooks | $48.06 | 209 | 105 |
| Baguette bags | $59.50 | 169 | 85 |
| Camcorders | $80.00 | 125 | 63 |
| Turntables | $81.00 | 124 | 62 |
Those are completed purchases, not clicks. Whatever your click-to-purchase rate is, multiply. If one in fifty clicks converts, the bucket-hat column at 5% is 20,000 clicks for $500.

The four things that shrink the number
- Sale prices. Most programmes pay on what the customer actually paid, not on list. In categories where more than half the catalogue is permanently marked down, your effective order value is the sale price, not the one in the feed.
- Returns. A returned order is a reversed commission under a cost-per-action model, because the action did not stand. Apparel and footwear return heavily; discs and hardware do not.
- Dead links. Peer-to-peer listings are one-of-one. Every link you publish to a marketplace item stops earning the moment it sells — and in some of these categories the peer-to-peer share is above 95%.
- Stale prices. Half of all feed rows are more than 67 days old. A reader who clicks through to a different price than you promised does not convert.
Our view, stated plainly because the arithmetic supports it: for a small audience, the only categories where affiliate income is worth the work are ones with order values above roughly $50 and restockable inventory. Below that, the honest description of affiliate revenue is pocket money, and creators deserve to be told that before they build a posting schedule around it.
Frequently asked
How much does a creator earn per affiliate sale?
Order value times commission rate. Across twelve categories priced on 1 September 2026, median order values ran from $20.00 to $81.00, so a single sale is worth roughly $0.60 to $16.20 depending on category and rate.
How many sales do you need to earn $500?
At a 5% rate: 500 sales in a $20 category, 250 in a $40 category, 124 in an $81 category. Those are completed purchases, not clicks, so multiply by your click-to-purchase rate.
Does the category you cover matter more than audience size?
It matters enormously. At identical audience and conversion, a turntable creator at an $81.00 median order earns four times what a baby-tee creator at $20.00 earns. That gap cannot be closed by posting more.
What reduces affiliate earnings below the headline number?
Four things: commission usually pays on the sale price rather than list, returned orders reverse the commission, one-of-one marketplace links die when the item sells, and stale feed prices send readers to a different price than promised.
