The dates, and where they come from
Black Friday is the day after US Thanksgiving, which in 2026 is Thursday 26 November — making Black Friday Friday 27 November 2026. Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving, Monday 30 November 2026. The term Cyber Monday is younger than most shoppers assume: it was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation in a press release dated 28 November 2005.

Building sets — median $49.99
- Live listings: 157 across 11 advertisers, from $5.00 to $679.99 — the widest range of the three.
- Channel mix: the most retail-diverse category here, taking in drugstores, warehouse retailers, office suppliers and specialist toy sellers.
- Day to buy: Black Friday, and specifically the large sets. The upper quartile is $134.99, which is where a percentage discount is worth chasing.
Sealed trading card product — median $45.00
- Live listings: 69 sealed boxes and blasters across 7 advertisers, from $3.00 to $315.00, interquartile range $25.00 to $85.50.
- Channel mix: 41 of the 69 come from one social-commerce marketplace. No warehouse retailer carries sealed card product in these feeds at all.
- Day to buy: Cyber Monday. This category lives on online-only sellers, and online-only sellers move on the Monday.
The vinyl-record trap in this data
Worth flagging, because it will catch anyone running this comparison themselves. A search for vinyl records returned 69 listings with a median of $83.99 — and 57 of those 69 came from one furniture marketplace selling record-shaped wall clocks, storage crates and display frames. The median was measuring homeware.
We are not publishing a records baseline for that reason. A number computed from the wrong objects is worse than no number, and this is not the first music keyword a furniture marketplace has swamped.
Which day suits which category
The useful distinction is not online versus in-store — that difference has mostly evaporated. It is restockable versus one-of-one.
- Restockable, warehouse-held, mainstream — sealed figures, big building sets, current-print discs. These discount on Black Friday because the retailer has pallets of them and a margin target.
- Long-tail, specialist, online-only — sealed card product, import editions, small-label reissues. These discount on Cyber Monday because the sellers are online-native and their competitors move that day.
- Single-item resale — discounts on neither day. A one-of-one listing has no promotional calendar. It sells or it sits.
The editorial judgment: most collectors lose money on Black Friday by treating resale like retail — waiting on a single listing for a sale that structurally cannot come, and losing the item.
Use today's prices as your baseline
The single most useful thing you can do 87 days out is record what things cost now. A November banner saying 40% off is a claim about a reference price you did not see.
