Should you wait for Black Friday to buy headphones?
Part of: Black Friday and Cyber Monday
If you want a discount deeper than about 30%, yes, wait. On 1 September 2026, 88 days before Black Friday, only 19.7% of 483 personal-audio listings from US retailers carried any sale price, the median markdown was 28%, and just 1.7% were at 50% or more. If 28% off is enough, you can have it today.
Last verified 1 September 2026 across 483 headphone and Bluetooth speaker listings from conventional US retailers in live product feeds. Peer-to-peer marketplace listings are excluded, because a marketplace sale price is a seller repricing rather than a retail discount.
How discounted is personal audio right now?
| Category | Retail listings priced | Carrying a sale price | Median markdown | At 50% or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Headphones | 169 | 21.9% | 28.0% | 4 listings |
| Bluetooth speakers | 314 | 18.5% | 28.8% | 4 listings |
| Combined | 483 | 19.7% | ~28% | 8 listings, 1.7% |
That is the whole answer in one table. Four out of five listings are at full price. Of the fifth that is discounted, the typical cut is a bit under 30%, and genuine half-price is vanishingly rare — eight listings out of 483.
How does that compare with the rest of the market?
| Category group | Listings priced | Already discounted on 1 September |
|---|---|---|
| Personal audio, retail | 483 | 19.7% |
| Electronics and physical media overall, retail | 2,445 | 7.3% |
| Same, excluding one permanently-discounted shop | 2,335 | 3.0% |
| Apparel, all sellers | 5,640 | 54.7% |
Physical media is the extreme case: discs are essentially never discounted in September. Apparel is the opposite — more than half of it is already marked down, and 1,609 of those rows are at 50% or more, which means a November "50% off" banner in clothing is describing the everyday price.
Personal audio sits between the two, and that is why the answer here is a genuine "it depends" rather than a slogan.

Should you wait? A decision rule
- Buying above about $150? Wait. A 28% cut is over $40, and the deep discounts that do exist cluster on higher-priced hardware.
- Buying under about $40? Do not bother waiting. The expected saving is under $12 and the item may simply be gone.
- Buying a specific model? Check whether more than one retailer lists it now. In physical media we found the same product at 1.54 times the price between retailers at the median — a bigger gap than the typical seasonal discount, available today.
- Buying apparel or accessories? Waiting buys you very little. That market is already more than half marked down.
For the record, the dates: Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November 2026, Black Friday on Friday 27 November, Small Business Saturday on 28 November and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November. That is 87 days from this page’s verification date.
