Why home decor affiliate income rests on very few retailers

Part of: For creators

Home decor pays the highest order values of any niche we measured — a median of $186.08 in a live 600-row sample on 1 September 2026, against $50.00 for apparel — and it concentrates that value in very few retailers. Two suppliers accounted for 456 of those 600 rows. The practical consequence is that a single programme rejection removes most of your linkable catalogue, which is not true in fashion or beauty.

The order value is genuinely higher

Home & Garden returned 36,962,142 live in-stock US listings. In a 600-row sample: median $186.08, tenth percentile $39.99, ninetieth $1,531.00, with 396 of 600 rows at $100 or above and only 19 under $25.

Furniture, pulled separately, goes further still: 9,441,319 listings, a median of $267.49, and 544 of 600 rows above $100. For a creator, that is the whole argument for the niche — the same click volume against a much larger basket.

The counterweight is patience. Furniture and lighting are considered purchases with long decision cycles, so a click today can convert well outside a short attribution window, and that purchase will not be attributed to you at all.

And it sits with very few retailers

Two suppliers between them held 456 of 600 rows. In our furniture sample a single retailer held 439. Compare beauty, where skincare alone returned 35 distinct retailers in a smaller pull.

What that means in practice, stated plainly:

What else is in the category

Worth knowing before you size the opportunity from the headline count: 103 of our 600 sampled rows came from an architectural house-plan seller, and a further batch from a second one. Those are digital drawings, not home goods.

They inflate both the listing count and the ninetieth percentile of $1,531.00. A creator recommending cushions and lamps is not competing for that inventory and should not include it when estimating what the niche holds.

How to play a concentrated niche

  1. Apply to the dominant retailer properly. When one approval is most of your catalogue, it is worth doing the application slowly and well rather than fast and five times.
  2. Hold a second approval in cookware or storage, the two subcategories with real supplier choice. It is insurance, and it is cheap.
  3. Write to specifications. Dimensions, materials and finishes are what home readers search and what converts them; a mood photograph without measurements is a post, not a recommendation.
  4. Expect long decision cycles. Considered purchases convert late, sometimes after the attribution window has closed. That is a real cost of the high order value, not a problem with your content.

The rate table we are not printing

Still missing from this page, deliberately: commission rates. Introspecting the CJ product API on 1 September 2026 returns a query root of ten fields, all of them product or feed queries, and a Product type with no commission field — there is no programme or terms query on it to read. Every category rate table in circulation is therefore somebody’s memory of an older one. We can date catalogue depth and prices because we pulled them; we cannot date a rate, so we have not published one.

Frequently asked

Is home decor a good affiliate niche?

It has the highest order values we measured — a $186.08 sample median, and $267.49 for furniture — and the fewest retailers holding them. It rewards creators who can win and keep one or two programme relationships, and punishes those who cannot.

Which home subcategory has the most retailers?

Cookware, with 18 distinct retailers in our matched rows. Rugs and wall decor returned 2 and 2 respectively, which is the concentration problem in one comparison.

How much is a home decor affiliate sale worth?

We can give the order-value half: a median of $186.08 in our 1 September 2026 sample, rising to $267.49 in furniture. The commission rate applied to it is programme-specific and is not published anywhere we could verify.

Why do home affiliate links convert late?

Furniture and lighting are considered purchases. A reader clicks, measures the room, thinks for a fortnight and buys — sometimes after the attribution window has closed, in which case the sale is real and the commission is not.
