Someone in your photograph is wearing a soft hat with a short brim that slopes down all the way round. That is a bucket hat, and the interesting part is that the name covers about six different objects with six different histories.

A bucket hat has a narrow, downward-sloping brim and a soft crown, traditionally in heavy cotton, denim, canvas or tweed, sometimes with metal ventilation eyelets. It is also called a fisherman’s hat, an Irish country hat or a session hat.

The modern version descends from the olive-drab cotton tropical hat issued to the US Army in Vietnam. The tweed version is older and Irish, dating to around 1900.

The tweed one has a genuinely clever piece of engineering behind it that nobody mentions: the lanolin left in unwashed raw wool made those hats naturally waterproof, which is why Irish farmers and fishermen wore them in the rain. They also fold into a coat pocket, can be sponged clean after falling in mud, and can be reshaped with steam from a kettle. No fashion bucket hat made this century does any of that.

The shape of this category changed between readings, and the change is the finding. On 1 September the new-hat side was six listings; on 9 September it was 64 across ten advertisers, led by SHEIN with 28 and Kids-World with 22. What has not changed is the other side: all 340 resale listings still come from one marketplace. A bucket hat is not a secondhand object — it is an object whose resale runs through a single venue, and that is the concentration worth knowing about. Note also which side is now cheaper. New retail medians $11.11 against $18.00 secondhand, because the retail listings that arrived are fast-fashion and children’s hats rather than the $32 Madewell reference point the category had a week ago.

Madewell has not left the category: the 9 September 2026 pull holds six Madewell bucket hats between $11.99 and $24.99, where a week earlier the same maker was the category’s $32 reference point.

Dating a bucket hat by its label, not its shape

Metal eyelets on the crown point to the utility lineage — military or fishing. Fashion hats usually omit them because they cost money and nobody needs the ventilation.
A reversible hat is a fashion object. Work hats are one-sided.
A stiff, structured crown is either 1960s millinery or a modern hat with fusible interfacing. The seam allowance inside tells you which: hand-blocked felt has no seam at the crown.
Sizing in inches with no S/M/L is an older hatter’s convention.
