What bucket hat is that?

Someone in the photograph is wearing a soft hat with a short brim that slopes down all the way round. That is a bucket hat, and the interesting part is that the name covers about six different objects with six different histories.

Corduroy, wide brim, embroidered front. $65 on the resale market. Corduroy is a giveaway that this is a fashion hat rather than a work hat.

A bucket hat has a narrow, downward-sloping brim and a soft crown, traditionally in heavy cotton, denim, canvas or tweed, sometimes with metal ventilation eyelets. It is also called a fisherman’s hat, an Irish country hat or a session hat.

The modern version descends from the olive-drab cotton tropical hat issued to the US Army in Vietnam. The tweed version is older and Irish, dating to around 1900.

The tweed one has a genuinely clever piece of engineering behind it that nobody mentions: the lanolin left in unwashed raw wool made those hats naturally waterproof, which is why Irish farmers and fishermen wore them in the rain. They also fold into a coat pocket, can be sponged clean after falling in mud, and can be reshaped with steam from a kettle. No fashion bucket hat made this century does any of that.

The market is one marketplace

We pulled 383 bucket-hat-titled listings from US advertisers. 96.3% of them are peer-to-peer, and only 7 advertisers carry the category at all.

Six retail listings. That is the entire new-hat side of this category on the network, and four of the six are the same Madewell hat at $32. A bucket hat is, in affiliate terms, a secondhand object.

Dating a bucket hat by its label, not its shape

Honest empty: no listing in this pull photographs an interior label, so nothing here is dated or attributed to a maker. The material tells above are how you narrow a hat down in person; they are not enough to date one from a marketplace photograph.

Frequently asked about bucket hats

What is a bucket hat called?

A bucket hat, a fisherman's hat, an Irish country hat or a session hat. All four names describe the same thing: a soft crown with a narrow, downward-sloping brim.

Where did the bucket hat come from?

It is said to have been introduced around 1900, in wool felt or tweed, worn by Irish farmers and fishermen because the lanolin in unwashed wool made it naturally waterproof. The modern lightweight version derives from the olive-drab cotton tropical hat issued to the US Army during the Vietnam War.

How much does a bucket hat cost?

The median ask across 357 priced US listings on 1 September 2026 is $25.00. Peer-to-peer listings sit at $24.00 and the handful of conventional retail listings sit at $32.00.

When did bucket hats become fashionable?

They were adapted as a ladies' fashion item in the 1960s by milliners such as Lilly Dache, became popular with rappers in the 1980s, stayed in street fashion through the 1990s, and re-emerged on the catwalk in the 2010s.
