What is the Lisa Frank rainbow unicorn folder? Identified
Short answer: it is a Lisa Frank three-ring pocket folder in a unicorn colourway, the school-supply format Lisa Frank Inc. licensed heavily through the 1990s. The white unicorn with the rainbow mane is Markie, one of the brand’s earliest characters. Four sellers had a version of it on the day we checked, from $21 to $240.

How the identification went
Identifying one of these from a resale photo comes down to the mane and the background. Markie’s mane is a full rainbow gradient running from the horn down past the shoulder, and the smaller unicorns behind her mark this as the herd artwork rather than the single-unicorn print. Both details survive bad lighting and heavy compression, which is why they are the two worth checking first.
Dating it without a copyright line
- Trifold versus two-pocket. The 1990s Lisa Frank folders are mostly two-pocket; the trifold portfolio with an interior flap is the later format, and the 2016 and 2019 reissues are almost all trifolds.
- Anniversary print. Anything reading ‘Happy 30th’ is the 2019 anniversary run, not vintage. It shows up in resale titles constantly and is priced as though it were.
- Sheen. Original 1990s stock has a lacquered, almost wet-looking finish that the modern matte reprints do not reproduce. In a photograph, look for a hard specular highlight rather than a soft one.

Last verified 31 August 2026, against 4 listings, each checked against the original frame. Prices move; read them as the market on that date, not a promise.
Curator’s note on that $240 Poshmark ask: the listing names Markie and Celeste, which is a genuinely harder-to-find pair print — but $240 is a hopeful number, not a market number. The $21 Mercari binder is the anniversary reissue and is priced correctly. If you want the 1990s article, the $30 eBay listing is the honest middle of this table.
Questions we get about this folder
Which unicorn is on the Lisa Frank folder?
Markie, the rainbow-maned unicorn, is Lisa Frank’s original unicorn character. The winged unicorns behind her are part of the same herd artwork, not separate named characters.
Is a Lisa Frank folder worth anything?
Ordinary loose folders sell for roughly $20 to $30. Sealed stock, complete binder-and-folder sets, and rarer character pairings are what clear $100.
