Is this Polly Pocket a Bluebird or a Mattel?
Two toys share this name and they are barely the same product. Sorting a Bluebird-era compact from a Mattel one takes about five seconds once you know what to look at, and it is worth doing before you buy anything.
The one-second test: how big is the doll?
Everything follows from doll height.
- Under an inch, one solid moulded piece, folds at the waist — Bluebird, 1989 to 1997. The doll has a round plug base that seats into a hole in the case floor.
- Roughly two inches with a straight ponytail — the 1998 Mattel redesign, the year Mattel bought Bluebird and made everything bigger.
- Around three and three quarter inches, jointed, wearing peel-on rubbery clothes — Fashion Polly, 1999 onward. The clothes are the giveaway: Bluebird dolls have painted-on outfits and nothing removable.
- Small again but bendable enough to sit in a chair — the 2018 relaunch.

Reading the compact itself
If the doll is missing, which it usually is, the case still tells you plenty. Bluebird-era compacts are hard, thick-walled shells in one or two solid colours, with the Polly Pocket name moulded straight into the plastic rather than printed on a sticker, and small plug holes moulded into the interior floor for the dolls to stand in. Later Mattel cases lean on printed graphics, clear windows and moving parts, and the interiors are furnished rather than plug-holed.
Our judgment: collectors overpay for a complete Bluebird case with the wrong-era doll inside far more often than they underpay for a bare case. Buy the case for the case. A correct sub-inch doll is a bonus, not a premium you should chase, because a mismatched doll is the most common thing sellers get wrong — usually without meaning to.
