What to look at, in order

The label sewn inside the main compartment. Made in USA puts the pack before the early 1990s. Anything else does not.
The base panel. Suede or leather across the bottom, stitched rather than bonded, with a visible seam allowance.
The logo patch. Older packs carry the wordmark on a sewn-on woven patch rather than a printed or rubber badge.
The zip pulls and hardware, which on early packs are metal rather than moulded plastic.
The lifetime warranty. It is JanSport's, not a seller's promise, and it is the reason so many 1990s packs are still in circulation at all.
