What is that little shoulder bag? Baguette bags identified

A baguette bag is a small rectangular shoulder bag with a short single strap, worn tucked under the arm rather than hanging from the shoulder. The shape is the whole identification — there is no hardware, lining or stitch pattern common to all of them.

Which means the brand mark is the only thing separating a $14 bag from a $3,590 one, and 175 of the 222 priced listings we pulled do not name a brand at all.

Coach signature canvas, $130 on the resale market. The strap length is the tell: long enough to sit on the shoulder, too short to cross the body.

Is it a baguette, or one of its neighbours?

Four small bags get confused with each other constantly. The differences are geometric, not decorative:

HoboCrescent, slumps when emptySingle, longerOn the shoulder

If the bag holds its rectangle when you set it down empty and the strap will not reach past your ribs, it is a baguette. Everything else about it — nylon or leather, flap or zip, logo jacquard or plain — varies freely.

What the name is worth, measured

We pulled 375 baguette-titled listings from US advertisers, of which 222 carried a usable price, and split them by the brand named in the title.

Forever 213$20.00$40.00
Shein10$14.00$25.00

Read the bottom row first. Four out of five priced baguette listings do not say whose bag it is, and they cluster at $50. That is the price of the shape by itself. Everything above it is a logo, and the ladder from Shein at $14 to Fendi at nearly $2,000 is a 140-fold spread on an object with the same outline.

The editorial judgement, for what it is worth: the unbranded $50 tier is the honest buy here. A baguette is a silhouette, the silhouette is out of copyright, and the high-street versions from the early 2000s were often better made than the fast-fashion ones being sold as Y2K today. The one thing we would not do is pay a mid-tier designer premium for a bag whose interior tag nobody has photographed.

Zara, $30. The flap-and-buckle front is the most copied baguette detail of the last five years.
Pale sage green Furla baguette bag with a rectangular body and short shoulder strap, photographed on a bed
Furla, $48. Structured leather, no logo hardware visible — without the title you could not place this bag at all.

Where the market lives

95.2% of these listings are peer-to-peer, from 8 advertisers total. The retail side of this market barely exists: 16 priced listings at a $296.00 median against 206 peer-to-peer at $50.00. If you want a baguette bag, you are shopping secondhand whether you meant to or not.

Honest empty: not one listing in this pull photographs an interior brand stamp, serial patch or date code. Nothing here is authenticated, including the Fendi and the Gucci. A designer name typed into a title by a seller is a claim, not evidence, and we are not going to launder it into one.

Frequently asked about baguette bags

What makes a bag a baguette?

A wide, shallow rectangular body and a short single strap meant to be tucked under the arm. If the bag holds its rectangle when empty and the strap will not reach past your ribs, it is a baguette.

How much does a baguette bag cost?

The median ask across 222 priced US listings on 1 September 2026 is $59.50. Listings that name no brand at all, which is 175 of the 222, sit at $50.00.

What is the difference between a baguette and a hobo bag?

Shape. A baguette is a stiff shallow rectangle that keeps its form when empty. A hobo is a crescent that slumps, and its strap is long enough to sit properly on the shoulder.

Is a Fendi baguette worth the money?

We cannot tell you that, and anyone quoting a number from a listing title should say so. The two Fendi-named listings in this pull ask a median of $1,994.50 against $50.00 for an unbranded bag of the same silhouette. Neither is authenticated.

Last verified 1 September 2026 against 375 baguette-titled listings from 8 US advertisers in the CJ product feed, 222 of them priced. Peer-to-peer asks of $500 or more are excluded from the medians as seller placeholders. Every photograph used here was downloaded and checked by eye; listings showing a person were rejected.
