Department 56 was founded in 1976 by Edward Rudy Bazinet. The name is an internal accounting artefact: at Bachman’s, the Minneapolis florist the business grew out of, the wholesale gift imports division was department number 56. The company was spun out as a Bachman’s subsidiary in 1984, Bazinet sold it in 1992, it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1993 under DFS, renamed itself Lenox Group in 2005 after buying Lenox, filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and was acquired by Enesco, which owns it now.
