Department 56 villages told apart: eight series, and which one you have

Department 56 does not make one Christmas village. It makes eight or more parallel villages, each with its own architecture, its own start year and its own collector base. A Dickens’ Village coaching inn and a Christmas in the City brownstone are not interchangeable and are not priced alike.

The series name is printed on the box and stamped on the base. If you have neither, the architecture is the next best evidence, and the table below is how to read it.

Two footnotes people trip over. Snowbabies is a Department 56 line but it is not a village — it is a bisque figurine range, and it is the single most common Department 56 item in this pull. And licensed series like A Christmas Story sit inside the village system architecturally while being sold and collected as film merchandise.

Reading the base

Maker line. Department 56 with the series name under it. Lemax, the other big lit-village brand, stamps its own name; unbranded resin houses stamp nothing at all.
Introduction year. Generally present, and it is the introduction year of the mould, not the year your piece was made.
Cord port. Village buildings are wired for the maker’s own light-string system. A sealed base with no port means a figurine or an accessory, not a building.
Box sleeve. Boxed pieces in this pull consistently ask more than the same piece unboxed — the sleeve carries the series and the piece name.

Collector notes we would act on

Department stores are the expensive buildings in every series, and they are also the ones that anchor a display — which is exactly why they are dear. In this pull the four most expensive listings are all department-store buildings, and the spread between a boxed and an unboxed example of the same building runs to around thirty percent. If you are buying to display rather than to complete a run, buy the unboxed one and put the difference into a second building.

The other note: Department 56 has changed hands repeatedly — spun out of Bachman’s in 1984, sold by founder Edward Bazinet in 1992, listed on the NYSE in 1993, renamed Lenox Group in 2005, bankrupt in 2009, and owned by Enesco since. None of that shows on a base stamp, and none of it changes what a piece is worth. It does mean current production and 1980s production are the same brand in name only.

Four of the eight series above have no priced listing in this pull at all. That is a gap in today’s feed, not evidence that those series are rare — we would rather show you the empty cell than fill it with a number we did not measure.
