What we would actually buy, and why

If you are buying one set and you want it to still be in use in six months, buy the Moonlight range rather than a 30-colour rainbow box. The rainbow boxes are built to a price on colour count, which means most of the barrels are near-duplicates you will never reach for; the specialist lines are built on ink behaviour, and ink behaviour is what makes a pen a favourite.

The one thing worth spending up on is dry time. Glitter and gloss gels sit wet on the surface far longer than standard gel, which is fine on loose paper and awful in a bound journal. If you write left-handed or you close the book straight away, buy the opaque lines and leave the glaze finishes for lettering practice.
