How old is my Hello Kitty pencil case?

The object is a Sanrio Hello Kitty pencil case, and the only reliable way to date one is the copyright line moulded or printed on the back. Sanrio prints two years: the character copyright, almost always 1976, and the year that particular product was made.

A case reading only ©1976 SANRIO CO., LTD. with no second year and “Made in Japan” is a genuine early piece. A case reading ©1976, 2014 with “Made in China” is a 2014 product carrying a 1976 character copyright, which is what most “vintage Hello Kitty” listings actually are.

How to read the copyright line

Turn the case over, or open it and look inside the lid. Sanrio has marked its goods the same way for five decades, and the mark is a date range, not a date.

What the mark readsWhat it means
Sanrio Co., Ltd. with no © symbol1974–1976, before the copyright notice was standardised. Genuinely scarce.
©1976 SANRIO CO., LTD. onlyThe character copyright with no production year printed. Read the country of manufacture next.
©1976, 1985 SANRIO CO., LTD.1976 is the character; 1985 is the product. The second year is the one that dates the case.
Made in Japan1970s to early 1980s.
Made in China or TaiwanMid-1980s onwards.
Holographic Sanrio sticker on the packagingMid-1990s onwards. Not present on true 1970s–80s stock.

The pairing that should stop a sale is a listing that claims the 1970s while the case reads Made in China. Chinese production did not begin until the mid-1980s, so the two cannot both be true.

Is it Hello Kitty or is it Mimmy?

Hello Kitty — her full name in Sanrio's fiction is Kitty White — wears her bow on the left side of her head, which is the viewer's right. Her twin sister Mimmy wears a yellow bow on the other side. On a printed pencil case the bow is often the only difference on the whole design, and a case printed with Mimmy is a different, less-collected item than one printed with Kitty.

New and used carry the same median, $18. That is the number worth sitting with: on this object, condition is not what moves price. The design does. A case printed with a 1980s Sanrio illustration in worn condition asks more than a mint 2023 case, because the buyer is shopping for a drawing, not a container.

The one thing that is not a dating tell

Hello Kitty's face has changed less than collectors assume. The mouth she is famously drawn without has been absent since 1974, and the proportions of the head have been adjusted so gradually that nobody can date a case from the drawing alone. Anyone telling you they can read the year off the whiskers is guessing. The copyright line is printed on the object precisely so that nobody has to.

Last verified 31 August 2026 against 149 live Hello Kitty pencil-case listings from US advertisers in the CJ product feed. Peer-to-peer marketplace asks of $500 or more are excluded as seller placeholders, as are repdigit asks such as $999 and $9,999 wherever they appear; retailer prices are used as published. Prices are the market on that date, not a promise.

Frequently asked

How do I date a Hello Kitty pencil case?

Read the copyright line on the back or inside the lid. Sanrio prints the character copyright (1976) and, on most products, a second year that is the production year. Country of manufacture narrows it further: Made in Japan is 1970s to early 1980s.

Does ©1976 mean my case is from 1976?

No. 1976 is the year the character copyright was registered and it is printed on Sanrio goods made in every decade since. Only a second year, or the country of manufacture, dates the object.

Why does the cat on my case have a yellow bow on the other side?

That is Mimmy, Hello Kitty's twin sister. Kitty wears her bow on the left of her head; Mimmy wears hers on the right.
