How to make money on TikTok: rewards pool or commerce?
Part of: TikTok for creators
TikTok pays creators two different ways. The Creator Rewards Program pays for views on qualifying videos and requires 10,000 followers plus 100,000 views in the last 30 days. TikTok Shop commerce pays a percentage of what your audience buys, with reported open-collaboration rates clustering around 10–15%.
For a creator posting about products, the commerce side is the larger number by a wide margin.

Two systems, not one
Most advice about TikTok money blurs these together, which makes the whole subject confusing. They have separate eligibility, separate payers and wildly different economics.
| Creator Rewards Program | TikTok Shop commerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays | TikTok | the seller, out of margin |
| Paid for | qualifying views | completed purchases |
| Follower gate | 10,000 | set by the programme, not by views |
| Other gates | 100,000 views in 30 days, 18+, personal account | seller approval and shop eligibility |
| Countries | 8 named markets | TikTok Shop markets |
| Video requirement | original, at least one minute | none stated |
The Creator Rewards Program, gate by gate
The published requirements, as they stood when we checked on 1 September 2026:
- Age: 18 or over.
- Followers: at least 10,000.
- Views: at least 100,000 in the previous 30 days — a rolling requirement, so it can be lost as well as gained.
- Account type: personal accounts only.
- Standing: the account must comply with Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
- Markets: reported as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico and Brazil.
- Videos: original, high quality, at least one minute long, and posted after joining.
The one-minute rule is the gate people trip on. A creator whose format is 20-second clips is not eligible for this money at all, regardless of followers.
Commerce income, by category
TikTok Shop commissions are set by sellers, within limits TikTok sets. Trade coverage reporting on 2026 rates describes open collaborations — the ones any approved creator can join — as typically 10 to 15%, with a reported US average around 13%. Category matters: beauty is reported at 15 to 30%, fashion at 10 to 15%, and electronics at the bottom because high ticket prices sit on thin margins. Targeted collaborations, which are invite-only, are reported as negotiable and considerably higher.
Two cautions we will not skip. First, those figures come from affiliate trade publications, not from a TikTok rate card, and we could not find a primary source publishing category rates. Second, a commission rate is not income — it is a rate. What you earn is the rate multiplied by what people actually buy.
Why commerce dwarfs the pool
Take the two systems at their published or reported numbers and put them on the same scale. Reported 2026 Creator Rewards rates are in the region of $0.40 to $2.00 per thousand qualifying views. Take the midpoint and 10,000 views returns something in the order of twelve dollars.
Now the commerce side, using live median prices from today's product-feed pull and the reported 13% open-collaboration rate:
| Product | Median price today | At 13% | Sales to match 10,000 views |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hair clip | $10.00 | $1.30 | 9 |
| Baby tee | $14.00 | $1.82 | 7 |
| Belt | $18.00 | $2.34 | 5 |
| Sealed card box | $45.00 | $5.85 | 2 |
| Building set | $49.99 | $6.50 | 2 |
Two sales of a sealed card box beats ten thousand qualifying views. That is the whole argument for product creators treating commerce as the primary system and the rewards pool as a bonus — and it holds even if the reported rates on both sides are off by a factor of two.
Method: item prices are medians from 36 keyword queries against US affiliate product feeds on 1 September 2026. The 13% commission and the per-thousand-view rates are published third-party reports, not our measurements and not rates offered to us.

Where to start this week
- Check which gate you are actually behind. Followers, 30-day views, video length, market. Three of those four are fixable by changing what you post.
- If your videos are under a minute, make one over a minute. That single format change is the difference between eligible and not.
- Pick the category, then the content. A five-fold difference in commission value per sale sits between the top and bottom of the table above.
- Do not build a plan on the pool. Platform-funded programmes change terms; retailer commissions are contracts with retailers.
Platform features checked 1 September 2026. Instagram and TikTok both change creator rules several times a year; anything on this page describing a platform feature is true as of that date and should be re-checked against the platform's own pages before you rely on it.

Making money on TikTok, asked plainly
How do you make money on TikTok?
Two separate systems. The Creator Rewards Program pays for qualifying views and requires 10,000 followers plus 100,000 views in 30 days. TikTok Shop commerce pays a seller-set commission on purchases.
What are the Creator Rewards Program requirements?
18 or over, at least 10,000 followers, at least 100,000 video views in the previous 30 days, a personal account in good standing, and videos that are original and at least one minute long.
What commission does TikTok Shop pay?
Trade coverage of 2026 rates reports open collaborations typically at 10 to 15%, with a US average around 13%; beauty higher at 15 to 30% and electronics lowest. These are third-party reports rather than a published TikTok rate card.
Which pays more, views or commerce?
For product creators, commerce, by a wide margin. At reported rates, two sales of a $45.00 sealed card box returns more than ten thousand qualifying views.
Do short videos qualify for Creator Rewards?
No. Eligible videos must be at least one minute long, which excludes a lot of creators whose format is short clips.
