Every Trapper Keeper era, dated: 1978 to now

A vintage Mead Trapper Keeper on the resale market. The wrap-around flap is the format; the artwork is the era.

The Trapper Keeper has been in and out of production for nearly fifty years, and the design changed enough across that run that you can date most binders from two things: how it closes and what is printed on it. This is the timeline, sourced, followed by what each era costs now.

The timeline

PeriodEraWhat defines itPrice
1978LaunchFirst sold in Wichita, Kansas in August 1978, invented by Jon Wyant at Mead. Sliding plastic rings, a wrap-around flap, and pocket folders called Trappers.$4.85 new
1978–81Metal snapThe original closure was a metal snap. Velcro replaced it after about three years — a snap closure dates a binder to the first run.
1988–95Designer SeriesThe psychedelic, funky and fashion-led artwork era. This is what most people picture, and what the current reissues imitate.
1996–99FuturoCityA futuristic-themed collection, visually distinct from the Designer Series and easy to date on artwork alone.
2007Magnetic closureA magnetic-closure version replaced Velcro in the range.
2014Snapper TrappersA metal button closure with the Snapper Trappers feature.
2015Licensed runStar Wars and Hello Kitty licensed Trapper Keepers.
2021–nowOriginal design reintroducedMead brought the original design back; retro prints and licensed tie-ins have run since.$14.75–$19.29 at Mead

The two tells that do most of the work

1. The closure

A metal snap means the earliest production, before Velcro replaced it around 1981. Velcro covers the long middle of the run including the Designer Series. A magnet means 2007 or later. A metal button points at the 2014 Snapper Trappers generation. This single detail brackets a binder to within a few years before you have looked at the artwork at all.

2. The artwork

Designer Series prints (1988–95) are dense, saturated and abstract. FuturoCity (1996–99) is chrome, grids and science-fiction motifs. Current reissue prints are cleaner, flatter and printed on a visibly modern substrate — and they are the ones most often relisted as vintage.
