Where to buy a vintage Trapper Keeper — and when to buy new
Two markets share this name and they barely overlap on price. Mead still manufactures Trapper Keeper binders in retro prints, sold new through office retailers. Everything else is peer-to-peer resale of 1980s and 1990s stock. Here is what each side cost on 31 August 2026.

When to buy new instead
Genuinely: most of the time. A new Mead retro binder was under $20 on this run, which is below the median vintage ask of $19 — and it has working rings, an uncracked flap and no smell. Buy vintage when you want a specific print or a licensed design that was never reissued. Buy vintage sight-unseen for the nostalgia alone and you will very often receive a binder whose Velcro no longer grips, which is the single most common failure and the one nobody photographs.
Four checks before you pay
- Velcro or snap? The earliest run used a metal snap; Velcro replaced it. A snap closure is an early binder and worth asking about.
- Ring alignment. Photograph closed, the rings can be sprung. Ask for a photo of the rings shut with paper in them.
- Are the Trappers included? The pocket folders were the point of the system and are usually long gone. A complete set is worth a real premium over a bare binder.
- Print wear at the fore-edge. Where the flap wraps, the artwork abrades first.
