These are asking prices from live retail and resale listings, not auction results. For ornaments that distinction matters more than usual: a great deal of the genuine mid-century trade happens at estate sales and in boxes of thirty, where nothing is priced individually at all.
What actually sets an ornament’s value
- The box. A boxed set with its original divider insert is worth a multiple of the same ornaments loose. The insert is usually what is missing.
- Paint and mica. Hand-painted detail and mica flocking rub off with handling and cannot be restored. Wear here is permanent value loss.
- The cap. Original metal caps and hangers are small, easy to lose and instantly visible in a photograph. Replacements are obvious.
- Hairlines. Ask the seller to photograph the ornament against a lit window. Hairline cracks in thin glass are invisible in ordinary listing photos and halve the value.
