Can a network change your commission rate after the sale?
The notice period is two business days, the protection is narrower than it looks, and nobody else publishes an answer at all.
Part of: For creators
On the one agreement we can read in full, a rate change is prospective, not retroactive — and that is a narrower protection than it sounds. Amazon may modify any term at any time by posting a change notice or emailing you, and the effective date is the one the notice specifies, which, except for increases to Standard and Special Commission Income, “will be no less than two business days from the date the notice is provided”. Continued participation after that date is your acceptance.
So a cut cannot reach back to a sale already made. Two business days is the whole of the notice, increases can take effect immediately, and the amount you are paid on a completed sale can still move for reasons that are not rate changes at all.
What the modification clause actually says
| Question | What the published terms say |
|---|---|
| Can the rate be changed at all? | Yes, at any time and in Amazon’s sole discretion, by posting a change notice or revised agreement, or by email. |
| How much notice? | The effective date is the date specified, and for anything other than an increase it is at least two business days from the notice. |
| Does a cut apply to sales already made? | The clause is written around an effective date, so it applies from that date forward. There is no published mechanism for repricing a completed Qualifying Purchase. |
| How do I accept? | By continuing to participate after the effective date. There is no separate consent step. |
| Can earning opportunities be limited separately? | Yes. The policies reserve the right to impose limits on the opportunity to earn commission income, and to discontinue or modify any special programme or promotion at any time. |
Read the second row as a creator rather than as a lawyer. Two business days is not time to change what you publish; it is time to be told. Anything you have already scheduled, and everything already published, goes out at the new rate.

Four ways your payout still moves after the sale
“The rate is not retroactive” is true and is routinely over-read. Under the same documents, the money attached to a completed sale can still change through:
- The commission base. Qualifying Revenue is the amount actually received, less shipping charges, gift-wrapping fees, handling fees, taxes, service charges, credits, rebates, credit-card processing fees and bad debt. The rate is applied to that, not to the price the shopper saw.
- Rounding. The terms note that per-purchase rounding can make your effective rate slightly higher or lower than your rate card.
- Disqualification. A cancellation, return or refund being initiated removes the purchase entirely.
- Limits and promotions ending. Special programmes and promotions can be discontinued or modified at any time.
None of those is a rate change, and all of them change what arrives. A creator who models income from a rate card and a sticker price is modelling the wrong number twice over.
What two business days is worth, by order value
The notice period is the same for everyone; what it costs is not. We pulled 1,711 priced US rows across eight seed searches on 7 September 2026, and the spread is the point:
| Seed search | Rows priced | Median asking price |
|---|---|---|
| Office chair | 181 | $349.99 |
| Espresso machine | 222 | $100.67 |
| Dog bed | 176 | $97.49 |
| Leather handbag | 214 | $44.50 |
| Hiking boots | 244 | $43.50 |
| Running shoes | 177 | $35.00 |
| Coffee mug | 244 | $20.99 |
| Wireless earbuds | 253 | $20.99 |
The eight seeds, published so this can be re-run: running shoes, espresso machine, leather handbag, office chair, wireless earbuds, dog bed, coffee mug, hiking boots. Root shoppingProducts, keyword filter only, three pages of 100 rows per seed, deduplicated on advertiser plus title plus link, then post-filtered on each row’s own targetCountry. Asking price is the sale price where a row carries one and the list price otherwise; peer-to-peer asks of $500 or more and repdigit asks are dropped as placeholders. 1,743 US rows, 1,711 of them priced, 34 advertisers, 7 September 2026. These are asking prices, not commissions: we publish no commission rates, because we could not verify a current rate card against a primary source.
A 17-fold spread in order value sits behind an identical notice period. If your catalogue is $20 objects, a rate change is an annoyance you absorb across volume. If it is $350 objects, the same two days lands on a much smaller number of much larger orders, and one category’s rate moving can be most of your month.
What a creator can actually do
- Read the change notices. They arrive by email or as a posting, and continued participation is acceptance. Nothing asks you to agree.
- Know which categories carry your income, not just which carry your traffic. A rate change is category-shaped.
- Model from the commission base, not the sticker. Shipping and tax are out before the rate is applied.
- Do not schedule a quarter of content against one category’s rate. Two business days is not enough notice to re-plan it.
- Keep the dated version of the terms you joined under. Both documents we read carry an “Updated” date on the page; save it when it matters to you.

It is a reading of two public documents, dated.
- Not measured: how often rates change, by how much, or with what notice in practice.
Frequently asked
Can an affiliate network cut your rate retroactively?
Under the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement, a change takes effect on a specified date which - for anything other than an increase - is at least two business days after notice. It applies from that date forward, and there is no published mechanism for repricing a purchase already completed.
How much notice do you get for a commission rate cut?
Two business days at minimum under those terms, given by a posted change notice or an email. Increases can take effect sooner. Continued participation after the effective date counts as acceptance.
Is the commission calculated on the price the shopper paid?
No. Under the published terms it is calculated on Qualifying Revenue: the amount actually received less shipping, gift wrapping, handling, taxes, service charges, credits, rebates, credit-card processing fees and bad debt.
What else can change what I am paid on a sale already made?
A cancellation, return or refund being initiated disqualifies the purchase; per-purchase rounding moves the effective rate slightly; and special programmes or promotions can be discontinued or modified at any time.
Do other networks give notice of rate changes?
We could not verify the rate-change terms of any other programme against a public source, so we publish none. If your programme has not stated a notice period, you do not have one.
Last verified 7 September 2026 against the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement §13 and the Associates Program Policies, both read that day, and against 1,711 priced US product rows pulled from eight keyword seeds for the order-value table. No commission rate is published here, for any programme.
