How to add affiliate links to Instagram

Short answer: Instagram only makes a link clickable in a small number of places, and captions are not one of them. What works as of 1 September 2026 is the bio, link stickers in Stories, and whatever surface your account type unlocks. Everything else is a workaround, and the workarounds are what break.
Where a link is actually clickable
This is the part worth memorising, because it decides your whole structure. A link only does work where a reader can tap it. Instagram changes the details regularly — check the Help Centre against the date on this page before you rebuild anything.
Your bio
The durable one. It is the only link every visitor to your profile can reach regardless of how they arrived, which is why the link-in-bio pattern exists at all: one slot, many destinations, so you point it at a page you control rather than at a single retailer.
Story link stickers
Clickable, but temporary by nature. A Story link earns for as long as the Story is live unless you save it to a Highlight, which is the cheapest way to give a good link a second life.
Captions and comments
Not clickable. A URL typed into a caption is plain text; the reader has to copy it out by hand, and almost nobody does. Putting affiliate URLs in captions is the single most common wasted effort in this category.
The structure that survives platform changes
Because the clickable surfaces are few and keep moving, the resilient setup is to keep one stable destination and let the platform surfaces point at it:
- One page you control, holding the products, kept current.
- The bio link points at that page, and never needs changing again.
- Story stickers point at specific items on it while the Story is live.
- Highlights preserve the Stories worth keeping.
The advantage is not aesthetic. When a platform changes what is clickable, you change one pointer instead of re-editing hundreds of posts.

What your account type changes
Instagram gates some features behind account type, and the gate moves. The durable point is not the current list — it is that a personal account, a Creator account and a Business account are treated differently, and the difference usually shows up in analytics access and in which link surfaces you get. Two consequences worth planning around:
- Switching account type is reversible and free, so it is rarely the thing standing between you and a working setup.
- Analytics matter more than the link itself. If you cannot see which posts send people to your page, you cannot tell which products are worth linking properly, and you end up optimising by feel.
Connecting an account to a third-party tool is a separate decision from switching type. Read-only access, granted by you and revocable from Instagram's own connected-apps settings, is a much smaller commitment than it sounds — and no reputable tool needs your password to do it.

Four mistakes that quietly cost money
1. Linking the category page instead of the product
A shopper who lands on a listings page has to find the item again. Most will not. Link the exact product wherever the product still exists.
2. Letting the bio link rot
The bio link is the one URL that gets the most traffic and the least attention. If the destination page is stale, every surface pointing at it is stale too.
3. Skipping disclosure
Disclosure is required where a link earns you a commission, and it is set by the advertising regulator rather than by Instagram. It also has to be noticeable — buried at the end of a caption behind a “more” fold is exactly the placement regulators single out.
4. Assuming a link lasts
Retailers delist and programmes end. Links need re-checking on a schedule, not once at publication — see what happens when an affiliate link goes dead.
What about the posts already published?
You cannot retro-fit a clickable link into an old caption, because captions were never clickable. What you can do is make the products in those posts reachable from the page your bio points at, so an old post that still gets found has somewhere to send people. That is the whole argument for treating your back catalogue as a catalogue — covered in how to monetise old Instagram posts.
Frequently asked
Can you put affiliate links in Instagram captions?
You can type a URL into a caption, but it is not clickable. Readers would have to copy it by hand, so captions are not a working placement for affiliate links.
Where can you put a clickable link on Instagram?
The bio link and Story link stickers are the dependable clickable surfaces. Other placements depend on account type and change often, so check Instagram's Help Centre against the date on this page.
Do I need to disclose affiliate links on Instagram?
Yes, where the link earns a commission. The requirement comes from the advertising regulator, and the disclosure has to be noticeable rather than buried at the end of a caption.
Why do my affiliate links stop working?
Retailers delist products and affiliate programmes end. Links need re-checking on a schedule rather than only at the moment you publish them.
