A phone gimbal gift for a creator who films handheld: the rule, and the three gimbals that met it

Chosen by specification; not tested. Each specification threshold comes from the maker’s own page, and each price is dated.

Part of: For creators

If the creator films on a phone they hold in their hand, a three-axis gimbal that folds and has its own tripod works straight out of the box. Three gimbals met every threshold below on 10 October 2026: the DJI Osmo Mobile 7, $72.97 at Tech For Less and $75 at Abt; the Insta360 Flow 2, $79.99 at Abt and $102.90 at Macy’s; and the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro, $121.97 at Tech For Less and $126.99 at Abt.

This page is not ranked and has no winner. Instead it sets out six tests, so you can run any gimbal you see through them. We have not used or handled any of these gimbals: chosen by specification; not tested.

A checklist of the six tests a gimbal had to meet: three-axis stabilisation, folds, built-in tripod, phones up to at least 300 g, at least 8 hours a charge, and the same barcode at two named US retailers. Three gimbals met all six on 10 October 2026.

The six tests

A gimbal had to meet all six. The last column marks the thresholds we set ourselves, as opposed to an industry standard.

TestWhat it meansWhy
Three-axis stabilisationThe maker says the gimbal stabilises on three axes and gives a pan, tilt and roll rangeOur suggestion: a stick or a stand with no motors does not steady the phone
FoldsThe maker gives a folded sizeOur suggestion: it fits in a bag with the rest of the kit
Built-in tripodThe maker lists a tripod built into the gimbalOur suggestion: it can stand on a table for a talking-to-camera shot, with no extra stand to buy
Phones up to at least 300 gThe top of the maker’s compatible phone weight range is 300 g or moreOur threshold
At least 8 hours a chargeThe maker’s stated run time on one charge is 8 hours or moreOur threshold
Two named US retailersThe same barcode (GTIN), new and in stock, at two or more named US retailers on 10 October 2026So there is a second shop to buy from and a price to compare against

The three gimbals that met it

Listed in price order, lowest first. The specification columns quote each maker’s own page, checked 10 Oct 2026. Prices are each retailer’s listed price, new and in stock, on 10 Oct 2026; they change, so open the listing before you buy.

Both makers measured run time with the gimbal balanced and standing still: DJI says level and stationary with no accessories, and Insta360 says on a flat surface at 25°C, with the Tracking Ring Light off for the Flow 2 Pro. DJI adds that using the gimbal to charge the phone shortens its operating time.

The two Insta360 gimbals differ in more than price. Insta360 lists 360° continuous pan rotation for the Flow 2 Pro, and Apple DockKit tracking, which it says needs an iPhone 12 or later (not the iPhone SE 3rd generation or iPhone 16e) on iOS 17 or later. DJI lists its Multifunctional Module as optional for the Osmo Mobile 7, so it is not in that box. These are the makers’ descriptions; we have not used any of the three.

Leaving a gimbal off this page says nothing about its quality. Bundles that pair one of these gimbals with extra accessories (such as Insta360’s Flow 2 Plus, the Flow 2 with an AI Tracker) were not listed separately. Other gimbals that missed a threshold, or that we found at only one named retailer under one barcode on 10 Oct 2026, were left out, and how smooth the footage looks was never part of the rule.

Check the phone first

Before buying, check which phone the creator films on and look up its weight, width and thickness on its maker’s page. If they film with a case on, measure it with the case. DJI gives the Osmo Mobile 7 a compatible range of 170 to 300 g, 67 to 84 mm wide and 6.9 to 10 mm thick; Insta360 gives the Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro 130 to 300 g, 64 to 84 mm wide and 6.9 to 10 mm thick (checked 10 Oct 2026). A phone outside the range is the one case where a gimbal from this page is the wrong gift.

Match the listing as well. Tech For Less sells each of its two gimbals here as New or Open Box under the same barcode; the prices above are for New. The Flow 2 comes in two colours, each with its own barcode; on 10 Oct 2026 Abt and Macy’s priced both colours the same.

Frequently asked

Will a phone gimbal fit any phone?

No. Each maker states a range of phone weight, width and thickness. DJI gives 170 to 300 g for the Osmo Mobile 7, and Insta360 gives 130 to 300 g for the Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro (checked 10 October 2026). Check the creator’s phone against the range before you buy.

Does a gimbal need a separate tripod?

Not for the three gimbals on this page: each maker lists a built-in tripod. A built-in tripod is one of the six tests in our rule.

Were these gimbals tested?

No. They were chosen by specification; not tested. Every specification threshold comes from the maker’s own page and every price is the retailer’s listed price on 10 October 2026.

Where the numbers come from

On 10 October 2026 we read each maker’s specification page for stabilisation, folded size, built-in tripod, compatible phone range and run time. We read each retailer’s own listing data for the same products through CJ Affiliate, matched the listings by barcode (GTIN), and kept only new, in-stock listings. The Abt and Tech For Less listings were also opened directly; Macy’s prices come from its listing data only. A price is the retailer’s sale price where it has one, otherwise its listed price. We have not used or handled any of these products.
