The word "brass" appears in every title and the composition appears in none of them. 17 listings say "antique brass", which is a finish name applied to new goods and tells you nothing about the metal or the age.

The four tests, in the order worth doing them
- A magnet. Brass is not magnetic. If a magnet grips, there is steel or iron underneath and any brass is a coating. This is the single most useful test and it costs nothing. Careful: a solid-brass stick can still have a steel weight in the base, so test the stem, not the foot.
- Weight in the hand. Solid brass is dense and feels wrong for its size the first time you pick it up. Plated steel feels ordinary; plated aluminium feels hollow.
- The wear points. Look at the high points of a turned stem and the rim of the candle cup. Plating wears through there first and reveals a grey or silvery metal beneath. Solid brass wears to more brass.
