BookTok's linking problem, and four routes around it

The lowest order value of any category we priced, sold by retailers your audience has never heard of. Both are workable once you see them.

Some links here are affiliate links — if you buy, the retailer may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. We have earned $0 from them so far. Here’s how it works.

Part of: For creators

BookTok's linking problem is arithmetic. Across 1,000 live US book listings on 3 September 2026, hardcovers ran a $15.00 median and paperbacks $9.15 — the lowest order value of any category we priced this morning, by a wide margin.

And the retailers that surfaced are not the ones a book creator would name: 480 of the 1,000 listings came from a clothing resale marketplace and 273 from a used-book seller. Four routes around this are below, in order of how much work each takes.

Zero-earnings disclosure: LinkToLooks holds no affiliate network approvals and has earned $0 in commission to date. We publish no income screenshots, no creator case studies and no testimonials, because we have none. Every figure here is either computed from live retailer data during this run and dated, or quoted from a named source, or flagged as something we could not verify.

A book is roughly one-seventh of a cat tree and one-thirtieth of an espresso machine. Whatever the commission rate turns out to be, a book creator needs an order of magnitude more conversions than a home creator to reach the same place, from an audience that is often younger and buying fewer discretionary items.

This is not a reason to stop. It is a reason to stop measuring yourself against creators in categories where one sale is worth thirty of yours.

The big trade retailers and the indie-bookshop platforms did not appear in this sample at all. As with every niche we check, that is a fact about the catalogue rather than about their programmes — but it is a fact you have to work around, because it is the catalogue that sits inside most linking tools.

Four routes around it

1. Apply to booksellers directly

2. Link the adjacent objects, not only the books

3. Use used and textbook sellers deliberately

4. Stop making linking the point of every post

Frequently asked

Can BookTok creators use affiliate links?

Yes, but the retailers reachable through a general product catalogue are mostly used-book and textbook sellers. Of 1,000 live US book listings on 3 September 2026, 480 came from a resale marketplace and 273 from a used-book seller.

How much do book affiliate links pay?

We hold no approvals and quote no rates. What we can tell you is the order value the rate would apply to: a $15.00 median on hardcovers and $9.15 on paperbacks. That is the smallest order value of any category we priced today.

Is Bookshop.org an affiliate program?

It did not appear in our sample. Several book retailers run their own affiliate programmes outside general catalogues, and for this niche applying directly is the route that matters.

What should a book creator link instead of books?

Anything adjacent with a higher order value: reading accessories, shelving, lighting and stationery all carry multiples of a $9.15 paperback, and they do not go out of print.

How this guide was made. We research and draft these guides with AI, then a person checks every price, link and factual claim against the source before it publishes. We work this way because it lets us re-verify prices across hundreds of guides in a day, which is what keeps the numbers here current; it does not decide what we recommend. Anything we could not verify is labelled as unverified rather than filled in.

LinkToLooks identification desk — we identify objects out of real photographs and check every listing by eye before we link it. Empty beats wrong. About the desk · published 3 September 2026.
