Making money on Instagram under 10k followers
Part of: Instagram for creators
Under 10,000 followers, the mechanics that still work on Instagram are the ones a retailer pays for rather than the ones Instagram pays for: affiliate links in Stories and bio, product-led Reels, and direct brand work in a narrow niche.
The 10,000-follower link gate that shaped a decade of advice no longer exists. Stories link stickers and up to five bio links are available with no follower minimum.

The advice that is now dead
Three things you will still read, all of which have stopped being true:
- "Get to 10k so you can swipe up." The swipe-up link was replaced by the link sticker, and the follower threshold on it was removed. Any account can put a link in a Story as of 1 September 2026.
- "You only get one link in bio." The bio field now accepts up to five links, again with no follower requirement.
- "Join Instagram's affiliate program." The 2021 native programme shut on 31 August 2022. Affiliate tagging in Reels returned in late March 2026, and it works by tagging products from a catalogue or by pasting a link you already have — which means the useful move is joining a retailer's programme, not waiting for a platform one.
What works below 10k
Put the link where the intent is
A link in a Story reaches the people who already opened your Story. A link in bio reaches the people who went looking for it. Both convert better per impression than a link in a caption, which almost nobody taps, because captions are not tappable and the instruction to go to the bio costs you most of the traffic.
Make the product identifiable
The single most common reason a product post earns nothing is that the viewer cannot tell what the object is. Name it. Brand, model, colourway, and where you got it. A post that says obsessed with these converts nobody; a post that says which clip, from which shop, at what price, converts the person who wanted exactly that.
Answer questions in public
Every "where is that from" comment is a purchase intent you can serve once and then serve permanently by pinning the answer. Small accounts get proportionally more of these than large ones, because the relationship is closer.
Depth beats reach, measurably
Here is a number from our own catalogue work that bears on this directly. Across today's pull of live US retail listings, coverage of a niche is wildly uneven between advertisers: in the Y2K accessory categories we measured, one marketplace held 97.9% of cargo-trouser inventory, while one mall chain held every one of the 115 new studded-belt listings.
What that means for a small account: your ability to link what you post is decided by whether the two or three advertisers who actually stock your niche will approve you. That is a much smaller problem than growing an audience, and almost nobody works on it first.

What to do this week
- List the twenty objects you would link if you could. Specific objects, not categories.
- Find who stocks them. If four retailers cover eighteen of the twenty, that is your application list and it is short.
- Apply to those four. Not to the biggest programmes — to the ones that carry your objects.
- Fix your bio. Five links, each with a descriptive title, pointing at the things people actually ask you about.
- Re-answer your last ten "where is that from" comments with a real answer and a link.
Platform features checked 1 September 2026. Instagram changes what creators may do several times a year; anything on this page describing a feature is true as of that date and should be re-checked against Instagram's own help pages before you rely on it.
Zero-earnings disclosure: LinkToLooks has been approved by no affiliate network and has earned $0 in affiliate revenue to date. Nothing here is an earnings claim, a projection, or a promise of income.
Small accounts, asked plainly
Can you make money on Instagram with under 10,000 followers?
Yes, through routes a retailer or brand pays for. Affiliate commission and brand deals have no Instagram-imposed follower threshold; platform-funded features often do.
Do you still need 10,000 followers for links?
No. As of 1 September 2026 the Stories link sticker has no follower minimum and the bio field takes up to five links.
What should a small account work on first?
Approval with the two to four retailers that actually stock what you post about. Coverage of a niche is highly concentrated: in the categories we measured today, one advertiser held 97.9% of cargo-trouser inventory.
Why do product posts earn nothing?
Usually because the viewer cannot tell what the object is. Name the brand, the model, the colourway and where it came from.
