What does a desk lamp cost right now?

A $112.99 median hiding a category whose middle half spans five times, sorted by which retailer banner you opened.

Some links here are affiliate links — if you buy, the retailer may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. We have earned $0 from them so far. Here’s how it works.

The median desk lamp in the affiliate catalogue costs $112.99, across 165 live US-dollar listings checked on 3 September 2026. That single number hides the shape of the category: 13.9% of listings are under $50, 40.0% sit between $50 and $150, and 46.1% are over $150.

The 25th percentile is $66.99 and the 75th is $349.00. A category whose middle half spans five-fold is not one median — it is two different products sharing a name.

Prices checked 3 September 2026 against live in-stock listings priced in US dollars, pulled from the CJ product catalogue during this run.

Almost half the category is over $150, which is the surprising part. ‘Desk lamp’ as a search term returns a decorating category as much as a lighting one, and the two overlap only in the middle band.

The gap between the 25th and 75th percentiles — $66.99 to $349.00 — is the number to hold on to. In most categories we measure, the middle half is a narrow band. Here it spans more than five times.

Read that table from the top and something becomes obvious: four of these seven retailers are banners of the same company, and their medians climb in an orderly staircase — $99.99, $199.00, $329.00, $544.00.

That is not four shops competing. It is one assortment sorted into price tiers and given four names. If you land on the $544 banner and conclude that desk lamps cost $544, the catalogue has told you something about the storefront you arrived at rather than about desk lamps.

Which band you actually need

Three things the listing usually will not tell you and which decide whether a lamp works at a desk: whether the bulb is included, whether the head adjusts, and the colour temperature. We have not switched any of these on. All we can tell you is the dated price and what the listing leaves out.

Frequently asked

How much does a desk lamp cost?

A median of $112.99 across 165 live US-dollar listings on 3 September 2026, with 13.9% under $50 and 46.1% over $150.

What is a reasonable price for a desk lamp?

$50 to $150 covers 40% of the catalogue and is where a lamp that both lights a desk and looks like furniture sits. Under $50 buys a task lamp, which is a different product rather than a worse one.

Why are some desk lamps over $500?

Because the category includes decorative lighting sold as furniture. Two retailer banners in our sample had medians of $544.00 and $625.00 while another banner of the same company had $99.99.

Does the retailer change the price?

In this sample the banner changed the assortment, which changed the price. Four of the seven retailers belong to one company and their medians rise in a staircase from $99.99 to $544.00.

What should I check on the listing?

Whether a bulb is included, whether the head adjusts, and the colour temperature. None of the three is reliably in a listing title.

How this guide was made. We research and draft these guides with AI, then a person checks every price, link and factual claim against the source before it publishes. We work this way because it lets us re-verify prices across hundreds of guides in a day, which is what keeps the numbers here current; it does not decide what we recommend. Anything we could not verify is labelled as unverified rather than filled in.
