What happens to your balance if a programme terminates you?
One set of terms answers this in full, and the answer splits in two depending on why the account ended.
Part of: For creators
An unpaid balance and a terminated account are two different questions, and the published terms answer them differently. Under the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement either side can end the agreement with or without cause on written notice, effective 7 calendar days later, and Amazon may hold accrued unpaid commission income “for a reasonable period of time following termination” so that the correct amount is paid, for example after cancellations or returns.
But where termination follows a violation, the same agreement reserves the right to permanently cease payment of any and all commission income otherwise payable, whether or not it relates to the violation, and without notice. Those are the two outcomes, and which one you get is not a matter of degree.
The two outcomes, in the terms
| How it ends | What the published terms say happens to the balance |
|---|---|
| Either party terminates, with or without cause | Effective 7 calendar days after written notice. Accrued unpaid commission income may be held “for a reasonable period of time” to account for cancellations and returns. Purchases made after termination are disqualified. |
| Termination or suspension for breach | Immediate on written notice, including for material breach, failure to cure another breach within 7 days, or Amazon believing its brand or reputation may be tarnished. |
| Termination following a violation | Amazon reserves the right to permanently cease payment of any and all commission income otherwise payable, whether or not directly related to the violation, and without notice. |
| Every other programme | Not published, in every case we could check. |
The third row is the one worth sitting with. It is not a penalty scaled to the offence; it is a reserved right over the entire balance. Whether it is exercised routinely we have no way to know, and we are not going to imply either way.

The clock nobody plans for
Termination is dangerous in proportion to how much money is sitting in the pipe, and the pipe is long by design. Under the same published terms Amazon pays “approximately 60 days following the end of each calendar month” in which income was earned. A sale made on the 1st of a month is therefore roughly 90 days from payment, and every day of that is a day the balance is a claim rather than money.
Two consequences follow, and neither requires anyone to behave badly:
- A programme you are winding down still owes you for a quarter. Closing the account yourself starts the same 7-day clock and the same hold.
- Balance size is a risk position. The larger the unpaid balance, the more a single compliance mistake costs. This is an argument for reading participation requirements properly, not for spreading yourself across more programmes.
Doing nothing is also a way to lose it
This is the clause almost nobody knows. Under the Payment Minimum section of the same policies, if there has been no substantial activity on the account for at least 3 years, Amazon has the right, on 7 days’ written notice, to withhold the accrued commission income for the inactive account — up to a maximum closure withholding equal to the gift-card payment minimum. Unpaid accrued income may also be subject to escheatment under applicable law.
The practical reading: a dormant account holding a balance below the payment threshold is not safe indefinitely. A balance under the $10 direct-deposit minimum or the $100 cheque minimum never pays out on its own, and waiting is not a strategy.
What to do before you need this page
- Read the participation requirements once, properly. The clauses that cost balances are compliance clauses, not payment clauses.
- Set the payment method that clears at the lowest threshold. On Amazon that is direct deposit at $10, against $100 and a $15 processing fee for a cheque.
- Do not let an account go dormant with money in it.
- Keep your own record of what you were owed — monthly, exported. If access ends, so does your view of the dashboard.
- Ask what happens to the balance before you join. If the answer is not in the terms, that absence is itself information.

Method and scope
- Terms: Amazon Associates Operating Agreement §2, §6 and §13 (the page states Updated: October 15, 2025) and the Associates Program Policies, Commission Income Statement §2 and the payment sections (Updated: April 14, 2026). Both read 7 September 2026.
- Not legal advice. This describes what two published documents say. It is not an interpretation of your rights and it is not advice; if a balance is at stake, the document to read is your own agreement.
- Not measured: how often any of this is enforced. We hold no affiliate approvals, so we have no experience to report and will not imply one.
Frequently asked
What happens to unpaid affiliate commission if you are terminated?
Under the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement it depends on why. On an ordinary termination by either side, effective 7 calendar days after notice, accrued unpaid income may be held for a reasonable period to account for cancellations and returns. Where termination follows a violation, Amazon reserves the right to permanently cease payment of any and all commission income otherwise payable, without notice.
Can I be terminated without doing anything wrong?
Yes. The published terms let either party terminate at any time with or without cause on written notice, effective 7 calendar days later.
Do sales made after termination still pay?
No. Purchases made after the agreement ends are explicitly disqualified in the Commission Income Statement.
Can an affiliate balance expire if I stop posting?
Under these terms, effectively yes. If there has been no substantial activity on the account for at least 3 years, Amazon has the right, on 7 days' written notice, to withhold the accrued income up to a maximum equal to the gift-card payment minimum, and unpaid income may be subject to escheatment.
Do other networks work the same way?
We could not verify a single other programme's termination-and-balance clause against a public source, so we publish none. Ask for the clause in writing before you build up a balance.
Last verified 7 September 2026 against the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement (termination, modification and remedies sections) and the Associates Program Policies (disqualified purchases, payment minimums and the dormancy clause), both read that day. No other programme's terms are quoted, because none could be verified against a public source.
