How long does it actually take an affiliate to get paid?
Part of: For creators
There is a long gap between a click and money in your account, and almost none of it is the network being slow. A commission has to be earned, validated, locked, and then clear a payment threshold before anything moves. Amazon Associates, which publishes its terms, pays "approximately 60 days following the end of each calendar month in which they were earned" once your balance passes $10 for direct deposit or $100 for a cheque.
The five stages nobody explains
| Stage | What happens | How long it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Click | The attribution window opens. Its length is set by the advertiser, not by the network. | Instant |
| Order | A commission is recorded as pending. Nothing is owed yet. | Instant |
| Validation | The advertiser confirms the order shipped, was paid for and was not returned. Commissions are reversed here, not later. | Weeks. Amazon requires the product to be shipped and paid for within 180 days of purchase for the fee to hold. |
| Locking | The commission becomes payable and stops being reversible. | Varies by advertiser |
| Threshold | Nothing is paid until your balance clears a minimum. | However long that takes you |
| Payment | The money leaves. | Amazon pays "approximately 60 days following the end of each calendar month in which they were earned" |
The stage creators are least prepared for is validation. A commission appears in a dashboard the moment an order is placed, which feels like being paid and is not. It is a claim that survives only if the customer keeps the item. Returns reverse it. Cancellations reverse it. An order that never ships reverses it. In a gift-heavy season this matters more than usual, because January is when Q4 returns land and a good November can shrink in the January statement.
The one set of numbers we can quote exactly
| Amazon Associates, as published | Amount |
|---|---|
| Minimum before payment by direct deposit | $10 |
| Minimum before payment by Amazon gift card | $10 |
| Minimum before payment by cheque | $100 |
| Processing fee deducted from each cheque | $15 |
| Payment timing | About 60 days after the end of the month earned |
Read the cheque row twice. A $15 processing fee against a $100 minimum is a 15% haircut on a first payment at the threshold. If you have the option of direct deposit, the difference between choosing it and not choosing it is larger than most commission-rate differences you will ever agonise over.

Why the threshold is the real gate for a small account
Work the arithmetic rather than the vibes. On a $20 product at a mid-single-digit commission rate, a single sale earns roughly a dollar. Clearing a $10 threshold is ten conversions; clearing $100 is a hundred. For a new creator that is not a two-week problem, and it is the actual reason the first payment takes months — not the 60-day lag, which only starts counting once you have cleared the bar.
Two practical consequences:
- Concentrate rather than spread. Five programmes each holding a sub-threshold balance pay you nothing. One programme over the threshold pays you. Being on fewer networks is often worth more than being on more.
- Check the dormancy terms before you go quiet. Some networks apply a monthly fee to an account with a positive balance that has generated no valid commission for a long stretch — which can erode a balance that never reached the threshold. Read your own agreement for the exact trigger and amount.
What we could not verify, and are not going to invent
Last verified 1 September 2026. The Amazon figures are quoted from the Amazon Associates Program Policies: payment "approximately 60 days following the end of each calendar month in which they were earned", minimums of $10 for direct deposit and gift card and $100 for cheque, and a $15 processing fee per cheque. The 180-day shipment-and-payment condition is from the same document. The attribution-window statement reflects that windows are configured per advertiser; there are 4,424 US advertiser feeds in the CJ network on this date, each with its own terms.
Some links here are affiliate links. LinkToLooks has earned $0 from them to date — no network has approved us yet — so nothing on this page is picked to hit a payout.
Frequently asked
How long does it take to get paid as an affiliate?
Longer than the payment schedule suggests, because the schedule only starts once you clear a threshold. Amazon Associates pays about 60 days after the end of the month in which commissions were earned, and only once your balance passes $10 for direct deposit or $100 for a cheque.
What is an affiliate payment threshold?
A minimum balance you must reach before any money is sent. Amazon publishes $10 for direct deposit or gift card and $100 for cheque. Below the threshold the balance simply rolls forward.
Why did my commission disappear from the dashboard?
Almost always a return, cancellation or unshipped order. A commission is recorded as pending at the moment of the order and is only confirmed once the advertiser validates that the item shipped, was paid for and was kept.
Should I take payment by cheque?
Not if direct deposit is available. Amazon's published terms set a $100 cheque minimum against $10 for direct deposit and deduct a $15 processing fee from each cheque, which is a 15% loss on a payment at the threshold.
Is it better to join lots of affiliate programmes?
Not for a small account. Balances do not combine across networks, so five sub-threshold balances pay nothing while one balance over the threshold pays. Concentration gets you to a first payment sooner.
