How long does it actually take an affiliate to get paid?

There is a long gap between a click and money in your account, and almost none of it is the network being slow. A commission has to be earned, validated, locked, and then clear a payment threshold before anything moves. The stage creators are least prepared for is validation. A commission appears in a dashboard the moment an order is placed, which feels like being paid and is not. eBay Partner Network’s September 2026 agreement
EPN published a new Network Agreement on 24 September 2026. It applied at once to anyone joining from that date, and to existing partners from 28 September. Three clauses in it are worth knowing before a first payment:
- The minimum floats. The threshold is 10 USD or the banking fees for the payment, whichever is greater, so an expensive payout route can raise it.
- Last click wins, and a retailer’s own click wins over you. If a shopper clicked several affiliates, only the last one is paid; if the last click came from an advertiser, no affiliate is paid.
- Caps are allowed. EPN may introduce earnings caps, such as a daily cap, on the programme, with three days’ notice for most programmes.

Read the cheque row twice. A $15 processing fee against a $100 minimum is a 15% haircut on a first payment at the threshold. If you have the option of direct deposit, the difference between choosing it and not choosing it is larger than most commission-rate differences you will ever agonise over.
Why the threshold is the real gate for a small account
Work the arithmetic rather than the vibes. On a $20 product at a mid-single-digit commission rate, a single sale earns roughly a dollar. Clearing a $10 threshold is ten conversions; clearing $100 is a hundred. For a new creator that is not a two-week problem, and it is the actual reason the first payment takes months — not the 60-day lag, which only starts counting once you have cleared the bar.
Two practical consequences:
- Concentrate rather than spread. Five programmes each holding a sub-threshold balance pay you nothing. One programme over the threshold pays you. Being on fewer networks is often worth more than being on more.
- Check the dormancy terms before you go quiet. Some networks act on idle accounts: CJ’s own blog describes deactivating an account that earns no commission for six months, and impact.com charges a monthly maintenance fee once it has been unable to pay you for six months because payment or tax details are missing. Read your own agreement for the exact trigger and amount.
Before the first payment: the tax form
A balance over the threshold is not always paid. EPN’s agreement says that if it requests tax information and you do not provide it, it may hold your payment until you do. For a creator outside the US, the form a US network asks for is usually IRS Form W-8BEN, which certifies that you are not a US person for US tax purposes.
