Which affiliate programmes should a small account join first?
Some links here are affiliate links — if you buy, the retailer may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. We have earned $0 from them so far. Here’s how it works.
Part of: For creators
Join for catalogue breadth, not for headline rate. In eight of the 21 product categories we measured on 2 September 2026, a single retailer supplied 80% or more of the sampled live US listings — so one approval is most of the market and one rejection is most of the loss. In pets, apparel and toys the top retailer held under 41% and no single approval is decisive.
The question most advice answers is the wrong one
Search for affiliate advice as a small account and you will be told which programmes pay the highest percentage. That framing has two problems. The first is that we cannot verify commission rates from any source we can query — we introspected the product API we use during this run and there is no commission field on it and no programme or terms query, so every category rate table in circulation is somebody's recollection of an older one.
The second problem is bigger. For a small account the binding constraint is not the rate, it is whether you can link the thing at all. A rate you never earn is zero regardless of its percentage.
So this page measures the two things that decide that, both computed live: how concentrated each category is, and what a typical listing in it is worth.
Concentration: what one rejection actually costs
We sampled every top-level product category in the US catalogues we can query and counted how much of each sample came from its single largest retailer. The spread is enormous and nobody publishes it.
| Category | Live US listings | Top retailer's share of sample | Retailers in sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicles & parts | 8,305,955 | 93% | 2 |

Method: CJ shopping-product API, US advertisers, in-stock only, one query per top-level Google product category, with a 100–200 row sample per category for the price and retailer figures. Pulled 2 September 2026 during this run. Category counts are of listings, not of products: the same item sold by two retailers counts twice.
Read that table as a risk map rather than a league table.
- Top of the table — concentrated. One approval gets you most of the category. One rejection removes most of it. If you work in food, media, furniture or home, your programme strategy is essentially a single decision.
- Bottom of the table — spread. Pets, apparel and toys distribute across ten or more retailers, so no single approval is decisive and no single rejection is fatal. Join more, worry less.
- The middle is where planning pays. Beauty at 53% and electronics at 57% mean roughly half your linkable inventory sits with one partner and the rest is worth chasing separately.

Order value beats rate, and it is knowable
You cannot check a commission rate from outside a network. You can check what things cost, and the range is wider than the rate differences people argue about.
| Category | Median listing | Middle half |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture | $309.99 | $206.99 – $1,764.00 |
| Vehicles & parts | $308.49 | $98.21 – $956.49 |
| Business & industrial | $169.95 | $72.20 – $418.95 |
| Luggage & bags | $126.47 | $40.45 – $326.50 |
| Electronics | $99.99 | $44.99 – $414.99 |
| Cameras & optics | $94.29 | $24.00 – $207.91 |
| Apparel & accessories | $71.47 | $32.67 – $447.50 |
| Sporting goods | $60.00 | $30.74 – $142.24 |
| Home & garden | $55.24 | $45.99 – $99.99 |
| Toys & games | $46.49 | $26.99 – $94.97 |
| Food, beverages & tobacco | $43.55 | $31.35 – $56.73 |
| Animals & pet supplies | $30.66 | $19.99 – $69.98 |
| Health & beauty | $29.47 | $15.99 – $59.95 |
| Baby & toddler | $25.99 | $14.99 – $39.98 |
| Media | $25.52 | $11.02 – $39.47 |
| Arts & entertainment | $19.99 | $10.92 – $26.99 |
A fifteen-fold spread in order value sits inside that table. No plausible difference in commission percentage closes a gap that size.

Two real listings from the same day's pull, eight times apart in price. Both are perfectly good things to recommend. Only one of them will ever move a payout threshold on its own.
A joining order that follows from the data
- List your actual categories, not your niche. ‘Home’ is a niche; home & garden, furniture and kitchen are three different concentration profiles.
- Look up each one's concentration. Concentrated means one decisive approval; spread means several useful ones.
- Apply to the largest supplier in your concentrated categories first. That is the approval that opens up the most linkable inventory, whatever it pays.
- In spread categories, apply broadly and in parallel. No single answer matters much, so the cost of applying is the only real cost.
- Only then look at rates — in your own dashboard, for the programmes that actually accepted you. That is the one place the number is current and true.

One warning about category labels
Category names are inventory taxonomies, not audience taxonomies, and sizing an opportunity from a label will mislead you. Two examples from this run:
- Home & garden above $500 is not furniture. In a 100-row sample of listings over $500, 65 were architectural house plans and 24 more came from a second house-plan seller. A home creator reading ‘36.9 million listings’ and ‘high order value’ would plan around a market that is largely blueprints.
- Apparel above $2,000 is watches. Every one of the 100 rows we sampled came from a single watch retailer. The category is genuinely 150 million listings deep; its luxury tier is one shop.
- Arts & entertainment at a $19.99 median and 92% concentration is dominated by a music and media seller, not by art.
The habit worth building: before you plan content around a category, pull twenty real listings from it and read the titles. It takes five minutes and it is the difference between a content plan and a guess.
Frequently asked
Which affiliate programmes should a small account join first?
Join for catalogue breadth first, not for headline rate. In eight of the 21 categories we measured on 2 September 2026, a single retailer supplied 80% or more of the sampled listings — so in those categories one approval is most of the market and one rejection is most of the loss.
How many programmes does a small creator need?
Fewer than most advice suggests, and the number is set by your categories rather than by your size. Concentrated categories need one or two; broad categories like pets, apparel and toys spread across ten or more retailers and reward joining several.
Does a small account get rejected more?
We have no data on approval rates and will not invent any. What we can say is what a rejection costs, which is measurable: in a category where one retailer holds 90% of listings, being turned down by that retailer removes most of what you could have linked.
Is a high commission rate worth chasing?
Not on its own, and we cannot verify rates from the sources we can query. What we can verify is order value, and it varies more than most rate differences do: median listing prices ranged from $19.99 in arts to $309.99 in furniture in the same pull.
What should a micro-creator ignore?
Category size. Apparel has 150 million live US listings and beauty has 525,000, and that gap tells you almost nothing about whether you can build a usable link set in either.
Some links here are affiliate links. LinkToLooks has earned $0 from them to date — no network has approved us yet — so nothing on this page is picked to hit a payout.
How this guide was made. We research and draft these guides with AI, then a person checks every price, link and factual claim against the source before it publishes. We work this way because it lets us re-verify prices across hundreds of guides in a day, which is what keeps the numbers here current; it does not decide what we recommend. Anything we could not verify is labelled as unverified rather than filled in.
